Following a unanimous ruling earlier this week that Delta Air Lines illegally interfered with a representational election for Flight Simulator Technicians at Delta Air Lines, the National Mediation Board (NMB) has scheduled a rerun election to begin on August 25, 2010.

Prior to scheduling the new election, the Board determined that laboratory conditions for a fair election were tainted when Delta promised pay raises for non-union workers.  The Board described as “troubling” the timing of Delta’s pay raise announcement – made on the first full day of voting in the Sim Tech election.

Federal labor law requires carriers to act in a manner that does not influence, interfere with, or coerce the employees’ selection of a collective bargaining representative.

The NMB also agreed with the IAM’s charges that Delta management.  Read More

The Midwest Territory sponsored the 2nd Annual ‘Spirit of the Midwest’ Rides for Guides, which includes a motorcycle run, dance and car show. The motorcycle run and dance were held at the District 837 hall in Hazelwood, MO.

Bad weather postponed the car show for two months, but it ended up drawing 120 cars and was well attended by auto enthusiasts from all over the St. Louis metro area. The car show was held at the District 9 hall in Bridgeton, MO.

The “Spirit of the Midwest” Rides for Guides raised over $40,000 at this year’s events.   Read More

Delta Employees Protest Carrier’s Interference

Delta Air Lines employees in Detroit and Minneapolis held rallies on August 5th to protest Delta’s using its internal computer system to bombard employees with management’s anti-union views while simultaneously prohibiting employees from speaking positively about the IAM. Delta’s interference also includes promising pay raises to employees that remain non-union.

“Delta has gone to court in an effort to prevent its employees from voting in fair elections and restricting what they say and what they can read,” said IAM General Vice President Robert Roach, Jr. “That doesn’t sound like a company that values its workers and their opinions.”  Read More

A Message from the President of the United States: “I’d Want a Union”

August 10, 2010

President Obama

President Obama speaking to the AFL-CIO about the importance of unions. “So FDR I think said—he was asked once what he thought about unions. He said, ‘If I was a worker in a factory and I wanted to improve my life, I would join a union.’ Well, I tell you what. I think that’s true for workers generally. I think if I was a coal miner, I’d want a union representing me to make sure that I was safe and you did not have some of the tragedies that we’ve been seeing in the coal industry. If I was a teacher, I’d want a union to make sure that the teachers’ perspective was represented as we think about shaping an education system for our future.”  Read More
